Abstract

“The geometry of fortifications” was the mathematical part of an activity carried out in two classes of a Dijon primary school, as part of the War and Science project aimed at rediscovering the First World War from a scientific point of view. Among various activities in physics (projectile trajectories, war machines, etc.), natural sciences, and even ethics, the problem of fortress defence was addressed through geometric constructions we found in seventeenth century books, particularly the fortification treatise by Jean Errard de Bar-le-Duc, chief engineer of King of France Henry IV. In this treatise, all constructions are justified by calculations of angles and distances determined by the range of the weapons used. Thus, the pupils were guided towards understanding these constraints, as well as their modelling by mathematics and the demonstration of the adequacy of the shapes created by the military engineers to these constraints. A final creative activity invited pupils to give a personal signification to the fortress as their own imaginary city.
