(La fascinante histoire des logarithmes.)

Résumé

Cet article examine l’histoire des logarithmes en présentant les protagonistes qui ont marqué cette histoire pleine de découvertes surprenantes. L’auteur de cet article commente l’intérêt de cette histoire pour l’enseignement. Il décompose l’histoire des logarithmes en trois périodes. La première, commençant par des observations reliant les progressions arithmétiques et géométriques, aboutit à la création de tableaux de calculs de logarithmes dans les années 1620 (Burgi, Napier). La seconde période, impliquant la découverte de logarithmes «naturels» et de séries infinies pour les calculer, aboutit à l’établissement de la relation entre les logarithmes et les exposants (Newton, Mercator). La troisième période, en étendant les calculs des fonctions logarithmiques et exponentielles aux nombres complexes, aboutit au travail d’Euler de 1748.

Abstract

This paper examines the history of logarithms, the remarkable individuals involved, and some of the surprising discoveries they made, and comments on the implications of this history for teaching. The author finds convenient to view the history of logarithms as falling into three periods : The first period begins with observations relating arithmetic and geometric progressions and culminates in the creation of practical logarithm tables and slide rules in the 1620’s ( Burgi, Napier).
The second period involves the discovery of « natural » logarithms and infinite series for computing them and culminates in establishing the connection between logarithms and exponents ( Newton , Mercator). The third period,applying techniques of calculus to logarithmic and exponential functions, and extending their domains to complex numbers, culminates in Euler’s work of 1748.
