Cet article donne les premiers résultats d'une recherche sur le contexte social de la construction des structures algébriques, en analysant des articles et livres écrits entre 1870 et 1945 dans ce domaine. Il utilise les outils théoriques sur la construction du savoir proposés par P. Berger et Y. Chevallard : internalisation, externalisation représentation et reproduction du savoir, et décrit dans ce cadre les processus et différentes phases. Pour chaque phase il montre l'importance de l'action de certains agents dans le schéma formel qui prévaut dans l'enseignement de l'algèbre au niveau supérieur. Abstract This paper gives the first results of a research on the social context of the construction of algebraic structures, by analyzing articles and books written between 1870 and 1945 in this field. It uses the theoretical tools on the construction of knowledge proposed by P. Berger and Y. Chevallard: internalization, externalization, representation and reproduction of knowledge, and describes the processes and phases within this framework. For each phase, it shows the importance of the action of certain agents in the formal scheme that prevails in the teaching of algebra at the higher level.
